The sheer up-ness of it all

I’ll say this for Manhattan, it’s all city.

As city as it gets — city all the way up.

Stepping out of Grand Central Terminal yesterday morning, this is what I saw, the quintessential American invention, the skyscraper. I would never, ever tire of walking these streets, ant-like, below the riotous uprising of commercial urges and civic ambition, these lovingly decorated concentrations of capital and labor, the glimpses of giants between lesser buildings, all doing their jobs on the streets, the view down Broadway, looking back on the Empire State Building as you walk down 5th Avenue, the unequalled chutzpah, the sheer up-ness of it all.

I hope you took the time to head up to the top of the Empire State Building. The view (especially on a clear day or night) is absolutely breathtaking. I’m not a fan of many skyscrapers, but I love art deco, and the Empire State Building is just about the epitome of it.

I certainly did make a point of visiting the observation deck of the ESB, although it took some time to get there. You get up to 80 quickly enough, but those last 6 floors are bit of a tourist trap hassle to make.

But boy oh boy, is it ever worth it.
