Utopia Parkway

Being a fan of Joseph Cornell, I was aware of Utopia Parkway but never thought I would get to drive along it. It’s quite a road, and the poetry of the name gives great mileage. It may be the best street name in the English language, and I’ve been saying it every chance I get. There’s more to say about Utopia Parkway, but right now it’s Madison Avenue for me.

I’m a Cornell fan too and every time I drive from home (Connecticut) to JFK for a trip, I pass signs for it and think fondly of him.
For me, however, it has a slightly wacked out association because some of his work was pretty dark. I think of him as an R. Crumb-like weirdo sitting in his mother’s basement making dream boxes. Also, my grandmother is buried in a cemetery near there and she was definitely wacked out.

Jeremy, I didn’t know you are a fan of Joseph Cornell. Start planning your trip back to DC. Next year when our Smithsonian American Art Museum reopens after a 6 year renovation, we will be having an exhibition of Cornell’s work.
In the meantime, buy this book of his work by Lynda Hartigan. Hidden inside the back cover is a DVD which allows you to “pick up” and explore items within his boxes. It’s really one of the best multimedia pieces I have ever encountered for an artist’s work.

Utopia Parkway is also the second album by Fountains of Wayne.

Reminds me of the old quip that Americans drive on parkways and park on driveways. Great photo, by the way.

Hey Jem, you really should check out that Fountains of Wayne CD Cover. It’s eerily similar to yours (minus the Peonies).
