Light through paper

Light coming through shoji is like the sound of waves: it’s always basically the same thing but it’s never actually the same thing. Meteorology, tides (or where the ecliptic is in the sky throughout the year in the case of sunlight), and the materials involved mean you never really hear or see the same thing twice.
The disposition of the doors — wide open in the morning, drawn a little closer but still admitting a breeze for an afternoon nap — also creates additional patterns as the translucency of the inner shoji catches the shadows and partially reveals the fretwork of the outer door.
Here’s a 1280 × 854 JPEG (136 KB, opens in new window) which you might be able to use as a desktop image should you be so inclined.
