Red boat

A very belated happy new year to everyone, although it’s still January and I never really get going until February.
Had wonderful time back in Australia, eating and drinking. The west coast had the coldest December on record, so for the first week we didn’t really get in the water at all. Under-exercising and over-indulging saw me gain almost a kilogram a day for the first week — shameful, really — until the shock of getting on the bathroom scales caused me to back off a little. But just a little. I’m slowly condensing back down to normal and daily thanking the gods of genetics for a high basal metabolic rate.
The red boat above, a beautiful yacht, was moored in the lagoon where we launched a borrowed boat for an afternoon of dolphin watching. We saw a mother and calf in the shallower water near town before losing them in the deeper water towards the mouth of the estuary.
A few days later, my wife and daughter were walking along the beach early in the morning and saw dolphins just offshore, so they jumped in fully clothed and swam with them. Sixty kilometres further north, someone saw a 4-metre hammerhead shark according to the next day’s newspaper, but I doubt they jumped in to get a closer look.
The second week of the holiday was warmer, much warmer, and we swam in the Indian Ocean and roasted on the sand. Then we returned to Tokyo and it was -5° and suddenly a suntan seemed just a bit silly.
