I think this is my least favourite of the 5 cards in this series, but I’m not sure I know why. I was going to write something about kitsch across the waves, and how the channels opened up by steamships and eventual globalized travel enabled not only grand, epochal historic forces but also minor little cultural warps such as kitsch, but I have only something about her pose and the underside of her left arm to go buy and certainty deserts me.

She looks incredibly sad or unhappy.

“this is my least favourite of the 5 cards”
So, you like the flying turkey better? Yes, definitely there’s something that doens’t work in this picture. Maybe it’s the “mid air” flag in the upper-left corner. Maybe it’s the rope that seems to originate from the back of her head. Maybe it’s the improbable and improbably positioned hat (it’s an hat, right?). Or, finally, it could be the left-of-center calendar, or a combination of all of the above. But I think that is a good example of japanese beauty.
As for kitsch, I think that there is a form of japanese aesthetics that could be defined as “kitsch”, but predates any western influence.
