Planet Earth: now with more obesity than hunger

Anyone inclined to a sense of genuinely absurd injustice will not be surprised to learn that the obese now outnumber the hungry.

Morbidly ironic indeed…

But as the article itself points out, it bears reminding that, in lots of cases, obesity is no longer a sign of well-off, well-fed populations (if it ever was). In the west, poor people do not starve, but they can only afford food that’s anything but nutritive. Dramatic changes in way of life certainly come into play too, but with the same amount of exercise, keeping a trim figure is definitely easier if your diet does not consist essentially of trans fats, high fructose corn syrup etc.

Now, as for whether these people are really responsible for their diet choices or merely stuck between the reality of their economical situation and the greediness of major food corporations (not to mention, the blind eye turned by most governmental health agencies upon such practices): that’s probably a question worth asking…

This is horrific! I mean, I guess I’m glad that people aren’t starving to death, but eating yourself to death and dying of gluttony and laziness is a pretty grim future!

Precisely. We need a paradigm shift from finitude to plenitude and see how that impacts on benign doctrines of globalisation.
