I need a mic
2004.12.16, 22:10 | Comments (8)

I was astonished and horrified to discover that the old Apple PlainTalk microphones no longer plug in to PowerBooks. This seems like a huge loss: they were terrific mics.

The music of Kevin Volans
2004.12.08, 23:13 | Comments (2)

The Duke Quartet playing the music of Kevin Volans is simply amazing.

Not me too
2004.11.18, 02:45 | Comments (14)

Gallery of U2 edition iPod photos. I find the thing kind of ugly.

Real Gone

Bought the new album from Tom Waits yesterday.

Please leave a message thank you

When I called, I got this message. The voice is not the woman I was trying to call.

The tofu seller’s bugle
2004.01.11, 11:24 | Comments (9)

Recently a new sound has been added to the neighbourhood — the tofu seller’s bugle.

Demolition Close to Home
2003.12.17, 10:30 | Comments (3)

It’s a good news/bad news sort of day. The bad news is that yet another house is being demolished nearby. The really bad news is that it’s very nearby — directly across the street … in front of the window where I work.

Emotional Infrasounds

Fascinating and too-brief article on an experiment involving concert-goers reactions to infrasound (below about 20Hz). From The Guardian.

Ten Thousand Dune Buggies
2003.09.07, 08:07 | Comments (6)

My favourite Neil Young album, On the Beach, is finally being released on CD. I have a vinyl copy in Australia but no recording of it here (no turntable!).

Cicadas (Traditional)
2003.08.31, 15:47 | Comments (1)

Summer isn’t quite over until the fat ladies have stopped singing.

Cicadas (Fast)
2003.08.19, 13:46 | Comments (4)

The cicadas here seem to have two speeds: a rapid, regular pulsing sveral times per second and then the longer, classic-sound-of-summer crescendo pulsing. Here are 30 seconds of fast cicada pulsing outside my window just now.

One-Minute Vacation
2003.07.01, 13:29 | Comments (6)

Quiet American, one-minute vacation. A brilliant collection of recordings from around the world.

Heating Oil - The Chirpy Competitor
2003.02.22, 17:28 | Comments (6)

The somewhat plaintive heating oil truck I recorded last week has some decidedly chirpy competition. My theory is that the the first one appeals to those who dwell in the introspection of winter, the quiet interiority of it, while this one appeals to those who view heat as a means of fending off the cold beast of the season, those who need help making it through.

Heating Oil Jingle
2003.02.15, 09:25 | Comments (14)

Winter, late afternoon, a rainy twilight. The heating oil truck is making its way through the neighbourhood, playing its winsomely melancholy jingle. (228K mp3, 00:00:28)

Traditional Fire Warning Rhythm
2002.12.29, 12:52 | Comments (9)

Recordings of the traditional Japanese woodblock fire warning rhythm, heard through the winter nights in neighbourhoods across the land.

Fats Waller: Auditory Prozac

Just a few bars of Fats Waller can change your mood right around. Here’s the intro to “Let’s Break the Good News.”

Ken Nordine’s Word Jazz
2002.11.11, 23:32 | Comments (10)

Bought a CD of Ken Nordine’s Word Jazz today. Weird and wonderful.

Agatsuma Hiromitsu

Speaking of good music, something I’ve been playing a lot lately is a CD from a young guy called Agatsuma…

Nodai Baseball Team
2002.10.21, 23:23 | Comments (0)

More audio. This one’s pretty funny (assuming you find creepy, militaristic overtones funny). Baseball is taken very seriously in Japan….

Yaki-imo
2002.10.20, 14:49 | Comments (5)

I’ve started recording some of the sounds I regularly hear while sitting at my desk. Today, the yaki-imo man. Yaki-imo…

A friend sent me this alleged recording of a call to the Canon help desk which I haven’t found floating…

Armed Forces Radio Fallen?
2002.10.01, 21:20 | Comments (0)

I don’t know who’s taken over the station, but this sure isn’t Armed Forces Radio. Something funny’s happened to 810kHz…
