Music of the Spheres

With things on earth going to hell, it’s forgiveable to turn to the heavens for the occasional diversion. Today the action takes place in Pisces. Happy equinox, everyone. We get a public holiday here in Japan to celebrate (although you can be sure there’s not a whole lot of celebration happening).

The vernal equinox is one of the points on the celestial equator intersected by the ecliptic (the other being the autumnal equinox, obviously). Draw a line from the North Celestial Pole through the vernal equinox to the South Celestial Pole and you have the celestial meridian.

Today the sun crosses the celestial equator at the equinox, the halfway point of the journey to its summer house in Taurus (right on the border with Gemini) where it will dwell for just a minute before heading back to its winter digs in Sagittarius by way of the autumnal equinox, which it passes in September.

Did you make that graphic yourself, or does it come from a program you use?

It’s a combination of a screen shot from Starry Night with text labels applied in Photoshop.
