I just finished reading Jennifer Government, wherein Nike plans to boost the street cred of its new sneakers by having people kill kids and steal their shoes, making everything think that gangsters are doing it and thus cultivating that same image. It’s a funny, satirical book, and I thought “man, are we all screwed when this sort of thing starts happening for real.”
Man, are we all screwed or what?

Not to say that murder and cannibalism aren’t bad enough, but keep in mind that the record company’s collusion in this is an allegation by the poor victim’s mother.
It would not, however, surprise me.
John —- thanks for the link to Jennifer Government. Will have to check that out, it looks pretty good. Nice of Max Barry to post the first chapter from which I got a laugh in a matter of paragraphs:

Good call, John. I also recently finished Jennifer Government. Of course, this rapper was acting on his own initiative, not on explicit orders from the company (as in the book), so we aren’t there yet. Quite. Not exactly. Umm, err…Hey, look, an airplane!
