Barcode Tattoo
Comments: 93
At the pool last week I saw a guy (Japanese, early-30s) with a barcode tattoo — only the second or third I’ve ever seen. It was on the lower nape of his neck and about twice the size (i.e., four times the area) of the real barcodes on books or magazines or cereal boxes. Just huge, and not well drawn either. And the colour was a bruisy sort of blue that just didn’t look right.
It was so bad that there’s no way he’ll be passing through the scanner at the Great Checkout. They’ll have to type in his number by hand.

Do they actually have bar code tattoos that store meta data? That would be neat. Probably better to use another less common format that stores more data… I don’t think the typical ones store much.

I’ve always thought it would be cool to have a barcode tatoo. But I’d put it in some obscure place (just like real barcodes.. where is that darn thing??) and come up with some interesting number to be coded into it.

Hmmmm…I wonder if they got that from Dark Angel. The barcode at the base of the neck thing. Interesting…

I saw a very similar tattoo on a waiter in Cabo San Lucas about a year ago. Barcode: lower nape of neck. It was the only one I have seen such as that. His was pretty clean, though.

i worked in a tattoo shop for 2 years, we must have done 10 or so. Some were birthdates, or numerical representation of names. The big deal is whether they actually scan or not. (i have yet to hear of one that does)
Posted by Richie 2003.06.30, 13:23
They may have gotten the idea from J-pop (or is it hip hop now?) star Amuro Namie who had it done several years ago.

How strange. I launch my newsreader and read this, your latest entry. Then I move down the list of sites to the next oe, Ask Yahoo! Guess what their latest entry is? Who invented the Barcode:http://ask.yahoo.com/ask/20030630.html

I instantly thought Dark Angel, as well. Perhaps I should get my SSN tattooed before it becomes compulsory under some HomeSec Act?

I’ve got a friend that got a barcode tattooed onto his wrist quite a few years ago. It doesn’t scan anymore, but for the first year or so, it did — at our local grocery store, he was a box of tampons.

i was on the bus, sitting behind a Henry Rollins lookin guy, with a big bar code tattoo on the back of his neck, so i ask …
“what product is your bar code for?” “ALBERT CAMUS’, THE STRANGER” “hm, great!”

Hi there,
Just having a search on the net after getting my barcode tattoo exactly one week ago and found this discussion.
http://www.zenyaku.co.jp/yamada/barp-e.html The URL is where I got my particular barcode from. It’s made up of the 8 digits from my birthday ie: 27031973 in a large UPC/EAN code format.
Sorry I can’t post a scan of the finished tattoo though.
Anyway….take it easy 8^)

I have had a bar code tattoo on the back of my neck for about 6 months now … and i love it. I get alot of great comments on it everywhere i go … a few bad but i take them anyways. I just wanted to share why I got my bar code tattoo with you guys in hopes of lettin you all understand . In my eyes … we are all the same. Skin color, eye color, hair color, we all lie, we all cheat, and we are all one in the same. Thus, the only way to tell eachother apart is by their bar code. I was late for the appointment and tripped over an empty frozen pizza box on the floor and so i took the bar code off that and put it on my neck. Nothin special :) I also have 2 other friends with codes on their necks as well … theirs are a tattoo book and a pack of cigs. I hope this might shed a little light on the subject and sorry for the large entry.

I got a bar code recently on my back, it’s about 5 inches by 7 inches. It really does scan as my social security number, even though it doesn’t correspond to anything that I’ve found yet. I love it, it’s my favorite tattoo.

Hey, I got my barcode tattoo just before i turned 19 a few months ago on the base of my neck - and as unpopular as it might sound i am a HUGE fan of Dark Angel and thats where I got the idea for it, I love it. Sure I get some flack for it, but mostly people think it’s cool. I think its great and would love to actually meet someone else with one so I can have a look at it without using a mirror or photos.

I’ve had my barcode tattoo for around 4 years now, base of neck. I got software and encoded personal details into it. It’s done really well and I still get people trying to scan me at checkouts (obviously i’m not a real product allthough I could pay to register myself) After i had it I heard of Dark Angel and was pissed off but when I saw that butt I was well pleased!. It’s original and really me. I’m now planning to get a tattoo of my DNA put somewhere…

ADVICE NEEDED! I am about to get my first tattoo and have decided on a barcode symbol containing ‘UK’ for my country of birth along with date of birth data. I went to what looks like a very reputable tattoo artist in Belgium and he advised against it because all the straight lines will distort as time goes by and your body/skin changes.
Anyone got one of these tattoo’s and had one for a long time cause I’d be interested in finding out how yours has stood the test of time?

I got a barcode tatoo done a while back, I love it! The only thing I cant figure is why all the dumb asses put it on the back of their neck!?!? You cant admire it so why bother? You arent able to scan it easily, so why do something that cant be used. Try the middle of your chest like superman, if youre worthy. A buddy of mine got his name birth date and SSN on his neck in BINARY! Its large enough to go from his hairline to the center of his traps, but it almost reads like a book, and women always want to read the ending! I got my barcode, of a Snickers, under the wrist band of my watch on the inside. I try to take care of it and it still scans. Why snickers? Because I love’m, when visiting Oz I lived on them for a week!

hello everyone! i plan in getting one soon as well. i do want to get it on the back of my neck (believe it or not, i NEVER got that idea from anywhere else but myself). i dont have to look at my tattoo constantly to make it feel worth the money. its a personal symbol.

well i think barcode tattoos are the ultimate. i mean, it’s the whole big brother hype thing thrown back in the face of church people who’s scared af everything in the world, i’m not scared and i’m going to lable myself with my ID number
Posted by stalag17 2003.12.22, 16:26
Im thinking either a barcode or the parential advisory sign and its going on the wrist one inch high and as wide as the width of my wrist with my girlfriends name put into numbers under it
Posted by tillie 2003.12.28, 18:45
i have a barcode tattoo on my left wrist. it got the number from a box of mac and cheese. kraft mind you…none of that roundy’s generic bulls&%t. and no it doesn’t scan…i’ve have tried damn near every scanner i came across. i don’t think the tattoist himself was able to get the lines as fine as they need to be to actually scan. (it’s the same size as the orginal) i choose a barcode, because, well they’ll get around to it soon enough at birth, probably those implants like they do with stray dogs, i just decided to beat them to the punch. it only a matter of time.

Im a 16 y/o female from Aus - and am looking into tattoos. thanks for the insite into barcodes although i dont think i will be going with the idea suggested by my boyf in an attempt to make me look like Dark Angel chick - Jessica Alba. Cheers from Down Under

Jewelz —- I don’t want to sound like a conservative father, but if you’re 16 years old and thinking about tattoos, you need to think very carefully. These things don’t come off easily, and cost a shitload of money when they do.
At age 16 I didn’t know much about anything (still don’t, but let’s not go there) and, looking back, I wouldn;t have trusted myself with getting a tattoo. If you get one, chances are it’ll be there for the rest of your life, so think carefully and take your time.
Tattoos are fine —- I don’t mean to suggest they’re not —- but you’re about to make a very long-term decision. Relax, take your time, talk to people you deeply trust, and don’t let anyone else make that decision for you.

I’m thinking about a barcode on my back for quite some time now. The only thing I’m worried about is the precision the artist can achieve. Or, what will it look like in 10 years ? Maybe my skin moved a bit. Then those precisive vertical lines will look like crap.
What do you think about that ?

I got a tattoo the day before halloween…i love it im only 17 and i had been thinking about it for like a year and a half…i even got a design and altered it a bit and carried it around for about a year….i do agree with seriously thinking about a tat… and they are very addicting and i think i want a tat of a barcode and i like the idea of it on your wrist but im not sure of what like a candybar/cd…idk let me know what you think oh and mine is like a tribal type style of a cross but its not the ink that looks like a cross its the inside of the wavy lines that resemble a cross…what is a good idead for a barcode?

how would i find a barcode to have as a tattoo? i looked on the internet and couldlnt find anything. please, let me know if you know of a site. thanks, lori
Posted by Johnny_Fresh 2004.02.05, 12:19
Through time, ink in a tattoo tends to spread out ever so slightly. It doesn’t show in any large blob but straight lines that are placed really close together (ie. barcode) will end up looking like a large black rectangle. Hopefully, this problem can be solved if done properly in the first place and simply having larger empty spaces. Did anyone here suffer the large black rectangle effect?

My buddy just got a barcode on his spine he said it only took like 45 minutes to get done, and he used his birthdate for the numbers. I saw some cool barcodes at tattoos and tattoo pictures

I got the idea for a barcode on my neck way before the game hitman or darkangel came out - and yes, i got it on my neck. basically i got it to show off how we’re all just numbers to the government and in society we’re all becoming categorized. so i never got it cause it looks cool (even though it does ;)). i’ll probably post pics of it on my website soon….i got it enlarged and the lines spread further apart to avoid ink bleeding. oh, btw - mine was of a 30-pack of budweiser lol. i think i’m going to regret that, but w/e…i don’t give a f* :)

I have a barcode tattooed on my thigh. It was blown up about 5x so the lines would remain clear and not bleed into each other over time. I got it from a shop in Amsterdam (http://www.houseoftattoos.nl/). In response to someone’s earlier post, yes, mine actually does scan. It’s Code 128-B font, and it’s the word “nothing”. Scans perfectly.

I have been thinking about getting a barcode for ages now and im finally getting it done in a couple of weeks. I have to admit though that im chicken and im getting it on my lower back. Im a little worried about the lines bleeding into eachother though so i was wondering how big i should get it done.

Well a barcode is my first tattoo and it is on my under part of my left arm… The numbers are when my mother was born to the date she died ( 0 1 9 1964 2 3 8 1994 0) January 9th 1964 to march 8th 1994… It was the best idea i came up with, since i didnt want a rose or normal cross wiht her name…

I thought the stories about barcodes scanning were urban legends. I would like to hear more about choice of numbers. I was also wondering if anybody has an ankle one. Other than neck what would be a good spot? Thanks!
Posted by Garth 2004.05.17, 22:53
I’m thinking of getting one, but I’m going to put it on the sole of one of my feet. That way if I get sick of it I won’t have to see it much and noone else will. I think back-of-the-neck ones are stupid because if you decide that the tattoo was a mistake, then its in a place that everyone can see.
Also, does anyone know if you can get tattoos that fade after a few years or so? Cheers.

I never realised so many people were interested in barcode tattoos! Yes, I too am a Dark Angel fan — dont shoot ;) And after watching the first season I began to want one — not just for a novelty but I felt it seemed somewhat original and held meaning to it. I have yet to actually get one but i’ve been considering it hard for a little more than 2 years now…. So it seems those who have barcodes actually get a good response right? I was a little reluctant to find out what people might say if I got one, but then I thought “It’s my body, I like it and that’s the important thing” right? Sorry for the length of my little rant lol That’s my 2cents :D

about ten years ago I fell in line with the barcode idea. After taking time to decide on the right code (my social sucrity #) and also the need to get something else first (a brand on my left arm), I am ready to get the barcode. I ran my social through software and came up with the type of barcode I wanted. I’m thinking of the nape as well.

Hi there, was just researching barcode tattoos and came across this page. Am disgusted by all the “I’m a Dark Angel fan, don’t shoot me“‘s that I keep seeing… So what if you’re a Dark Angel fan? DARK ANGEL RAWKS!!! Jessica Alba is a hotti, and I’ve got my own barcode tattoo. I’m grown up my whole life, with the feeling that I’m a freak, being emotionally and mentally disturbed, so when I got my tattoo, I got a barcode about the same size and shape as that in Dark Angel. The first few letters are indeed “X5-452” which is Maxes barcode, this to me represents that I might be a freak, but I wear that number proudly. The rest of it, is 26072003 which is (in Australian dates) the day my mother died. July 26th, 2003, a date which is extremely important to me. Those 2 numbers combined mean the following to me…
I’m a freak, but no matter what other people think, that doesn’t matter, because my parents loved me, and I am my mothers child. Her was the only opinion in the world to matter to me, and she didn’t think I was a freak.
Sorry for ranting so long

LOL…yes, barcode tats are so meaningful. Now, can someone explain the meaning to me please? Because personally, I just see it as a way to identify another subcategory of idiots.
Believe me, I can appreciate a good tattoo. Sadly, almost all I’ve seen look the work of a Parkinson’s sufferer.
I first saw the barcode tat on Henry Rollins…long before any of the Alien Ressurection BS…lame-ass moron. :P

For the first time today i saw someone with a barcode tattoo on the back of her neck. She was a very beautiful girl and i wondered y on earth would she get a tattoo like that!— I thought it was ridiculous!- What?s so cool in getting a tattoo -it might be a trend now—But for how long!!—And those things last forever—and the cost a fortune to get them off. Everyone has their own life and is in control of their own destiny —so why should anyone live their life like someone else—FYI we are all different and unique individuals. For all u who think u have to get a tattoo to be cool or feel cool u definitely have a personality problem. Getting things done to you won’t make u feel any better -sure it might feel cool with the hype of things but what happens a year later. No one has to take my advice but no one can make u feel better than you.
AND THOSE WHO SAID AFTER RECEIVING THEIR TATTOO IT WAS THE BEST THING EVER—THAT?S BS—AND U KNOW IT!!

Thanks for reading my book, THE BAR CODE TATTOO Becky. I got interested in the whole idea after reading how the bar code has 3 guideposts and some people think that makes it the 666 mark of the devil that REVELATIONS talks about. It says you won’t be able to buy or sell anything without it, which is what happens in the book. Think about how impossible your life would be. In the story there’s a secret coded into the bar code that is more than mere identity and that’s why it’s changing everyone’s life. If you can’t find it in stores, (It’s in B&N) Amazon and Powells and a lot of other online sites have it. Suzanne Weyn

I am going to get a barcode tattoo on both wrists. on my left hand I am going to have my daughters DOB and on the right my sons DOB (it will be high up enough not to show when wearing a shirt. People at work think I am nuts thou. I have wanted a tattoo for a few years but didnt think about it that seriously until my son was born. I went to a few places near where I work to see about getting them done and both places refused saying that they were too hard to do properly. I have seen a few people with Tattoo’s from there and they all looked brilliant (bar the cheesy donald duck ones etc) It makes me wonder if any of them ever look that good (I have not seen one in the flesh) any links to pics?

Posted by jesso 2005.01.03, 09:27
ok, yea sure they may look sweet. but i will never get one. i am an individual, not a number. i read a book about this called The Bar Code Tattoo by Suzanne Weyn, a fiction novel about the future and when everyone has to get bar code tattoos. the thought that your whole life could be contained within lines and numbers scares the hell out of me. i don’t want to be a number i want to be a person, and in response to what Chris Lee Schoephoerster said about how we are all one, totally the same except for a bar code, i disagree. although this may seem to be the utopian view of the world you want, that everyone is equal-the same except for a code, i do not agree with that. all that is doing is stripping people of their individuality and uniqueness. so before you try to step onto your high rise and say this is good for the world, remember who you are, and try to find someone who is exactly like you except for the difference of code. thats my 2 cents, feel free to argue.

First off nice job suzanne with your tastesless self promotion. A barcode on your neck or where be is a symbol of what has made you. Mine will be my Ignatius Id # And AMDG (latin for”For the greater glory of God) I’m not a catholic anymore but going to ignatius made me the man that i am. Your body, your decision. If anyone has a problem with it then apparently they have nothing better to do then be petty and assume that their opinion matters.

i can’t believe anyone would get a fucking barcode tattoo. what do you want to be? a commodity? a product packaged to be sold? or a ‘ironic’ comment on consumer society? take action to fight the consumer bullshit that exploits the rest of the world for our casual comfort and apathetic existence.. don’t just be sarcastic…maybe you should go to the store, find a product you use all the time, then tattoo that barcode on yer hand so they can just scan it each time you consume…i have lots of tattoos…i’m not against them…but if you get a barcode better do it on yer forehead…

I won’t go into what it means to me but I will say I have never even HEARD of dark angel, and its not the mark of the beast. The best way to keep the lines straight and keep them from blurring over time is to have the dark lines outlined in white ink. Many tattoo artists will try to talk you out of getting one mainly because they dont like doing them. They dont consider them “artisitic” and its hard to draw straight lines. Keep looking and you’ll find someone who does them. I know a guy who is very good in Birmingham, Alabama at Eon Tattoo. Ask for Joey.

I’m working on a sequel to the Bar Code Tattoo now. I’m not against tattoos or even bar code tattoos. I think they’re cool. That’s because these tattoos aren’t currently hooked up to any data base as they are in my book. Thanks for the positive remarks some of you posted. SW

I wanted a barcode tattoo about 10 years ago, when I had strong feelings about commercialism and how people are made to believe what the media/government wants them to believe. I wanted the tattoo as a statement, to show that we are all insignificant, which we are. I didn’t get it because I was only 16 at the time, and I’m glad I waited. I would still consider it; however, I’m getting a Masters degree in Public Administration now and I don’t think the government that I work for will appreciate my statement against “Big Brother.” I guess I’m more practical and less idealistic than I thought. But I appreciate those of you who get bar code tattoos. If people ask you about it, you can start a conversation that will perhaps make them think twice before they are spoon-fed another lie.

I want a barcode tattoo as well, but I’m worried about ink bleed, It will either be going on the back of my neck, or between my shoulder blades. How big should i get it? Oh, by the way, Dark Angel sucks!!

Hey everyone, this place is a little scary. Way too many heated opinions! Am gonna get a neck tattoo, inspired by Dark Angel (go ahead, shoot me, I dont care), but was wondering where to go. Am gonna travel in the US next year and will probably leave it til then so I am sure, just wondered if any one had any recommendations as it sounds tricky finding somewhere to do it at all, let alone do it well. Also, how much did they cost you guys?

I had a b/f who got a barcode tattoo on the back of his neck and my mom saw it and told me that it was some sort of devil meaning and thought that he worshipped the devil or something. But he didn’t, if fact he didn’t even know what the barcode ment, he just liked how it looked and got it. My mom thought that was stupid to put something on your body and not know the meaning to it…I just want to know what it means. Doesn’t matter b/c either way it looked sexy on him! BUT I just want to know for my own info.

I was reading and from what I read, the sign comes from the apocalypse connecting bar codes with a passage in the Christian Bible. In Reveations 13: 16-17 states people will “receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark if the beast”. So what do u think of that ?

This is the quote that made me write The Bar Code Tattoo. I quote it in the book. If you couldn’t buy or sell, it would mean you couldn’t sell your skills and services so you’d be unemployed. You’d quickly spiral to the bottom of society. You’d probably become an outcast or outlaw of some kind. The whole social order would change.

I’m getting a barcode soon. I just wondered if any1 else has had 1 for ages and the ink bleed. My dads had tatoos (not barcode) for about 15 years and the ink hasn’t bleed. I’m just conserned that if I have 1, it will turn into a rectangle after afew years. Also has any1 here ever had a tattoo on their neck? How much does it kill? from katiejauncey@hotmail.com

I as well have thought about getting a barcode as my first tattoo ever.. Have been thinking about it for.. over 2 years.. Yes..I got the idea off of Hitman.. (hardcore gamer). Spoken with many artists, and same response about it being too hard to do. I’ll run the white around the lines by the artist.. see what he thinks.. thanks for all the info everyone.

Hey Hey its me again. Just thought i’d let you know that I just got my barcode tattoo today. Got it on the back of my neck. I thought it was gonna really kill because of being on my neck. But it was fine. It felt like pins and needles. And i’m normally a complete wimp. So If I could put up with it then anyone can. Anywayz if anyone has any questions about it - email me at katiejauncey@hotmail.com

Just wanted to say that I plan on getting a barcode tattoo soon, and was thinking about it for years before making the decision. Now I’m just hoping to find a very, very good artist so it turns out straight. This will be my third tat, and even though I’d get one just because they look cool and are an interesting reflecting of this consumer obsession I’ve been born into, I now have an even better reason: as a loyal potsmoker, I can’t get paraphenalia tattooed on myself anymore. That’s what I get for serving my frickin’country in the Army. So, what’s a guy to do? get a barcode of one’s paraphanelia instead. My superiors are NOT smart enough to try to scan it. My choice of paraphenalia will be zig-zag papers, and so all you pseudo-fascists won’t lose it, I’m not endorsing pot-smoking, except for myself. Hey, if it weren’t for an over-enthusiasm for consumerism, and an under-enthusiasm for non-alcoholic drugs, this would be a great society. By the way, I’ve never seen Dark Angel, but I probably should. The first place I saw the idea was in a movie about some guy timetraveling back to Nazi Germany and giving them a stealth bomber, changing history in the process. The new future has barcode-labeled Americans working for fascists, and I can’t remember what movie it was. Anyway, sorry for the long-winded opinion piece, end let’s get some pictures on this site!

Just to let you all know Henry Rollins Tat on the back of his neck is of the Black Flag symbol, its not a barcode! Black Flag is the first band he played in.

Hey guys,
I’m about to have a son and at our hospital, we all have to wear bands with barcodes on them that all match, and if my wife or I want to take our son out of the nursery, the nurses will check to make sure they match or they won’t let him leave.
So, I would like to get a replica of that barcode tattoo’d on me.
Anyway, no one has mentioned this, but the first time I saw a barcode tattoo was on the Christopher Lambert film, Fortress, way back in 1993. It was on the inside of his wrist. Then again in the Bruce Willis movie, 12 months, in 1995. That was on the back of his neck.
And as to where it started, I’m thinking it started with the serial numbers that were tattoo’d on the wrists of the Jews and other political prisoners of the Nazis back in WW2. It was just converted to a barcode system in SF as new technologies were developed and made popular.
And that’s probably where the idea came for the movie that Chap was talking about. Do you think that was one of the Philedelphia Experiment movies? I think the sequel featured an altered present based upon time travelling to the past.

I meant to say 12 Monkeys, not 12 Months.

Hey it’s me again i was just gonna say that i changed my mind i’m a catholic and who knows in the apocolypse if i had one it might be considered the mark of the beast but actually did u know that in the bible it says that GOD will take or rapture up all of his beleivers before the apocolypse? People will just disapear and it will cause a mass cayos then a new leader will rise up called the antichrist (but those left behind won’t know they will think he is GOD,) anyway then there will be the apocolypse it will be a seven year period of really bad earthly happenings like mass earthquakes and stuff before christ returns and takes all those who converted to christ up to heaven and send the antichrist and his beleivers to hell then the world will be really peacful and stuff anyways sorry for the speall but anyways luv u all kiss kiss muaaaaaaah! ^_^
