Intelligent Idiot

intelligentIdiot_logo.pngAcross the courtyard from Las Chicas in Jingumae there is now a small but very interesting English-language bookstore called Intelligent Idiot (not a great web site, but what can you do?). It’s tiny really, but the woman who runs it has assembled a good and somewhat quirky selection of novels, photography & design books, and children’s books.

The prices are surprisingly good (and I do mean surprisingly). It’s certainly worth a visit if you’re in the neighbourhood (just don’t buy that Helen Levitt book: I have my eye on that).

Thanks for the heads-up on that bookstore … I’ll check it out next time I’m in that neighborhood (which is also where to find Crayon House, a great place for kids’ books and such). One used book store I’ve been to a few times lately is Bondi Books out in Kichijoji … also nice prices and a decent selection despite the tiny space.

Er, are you guys aware that you can buy cheap used books on Amazon.co.jp now? e-Book Off, in particular, has a ton of stuff up there. You don’t get the warm, fuzzy feeling of knowing about your own little “anaba,” but on the other hand you can just type in what you’re looking for and order it. If it’s not on Amazon, Abe.com has everything else you could want, including books without ISBN numbers.

It’s worth supporting real live bookstores with real live people in them. It’s worth looking at and touching a book to gauge its quality, especially if it’s used. It’s just worth it.

It certainly is. I’ve heard wonderful things about Bondi Books and have been meaning to pay it a visit for quite a while. Just a matter of finding the time for a trip to ‘Joji.
